BAMBOO SLACK KEY
from Riley Lee & Jeff Peterson

Honolulu, Hawaii, December, 2001... Hula Records International proudly announces the second release by world-renowned shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) grand master, Riley Lee (of Hawai`i and Australia) and Maui born guitarist Jeff Peterson.  Lee, with nearly 50 albums to his credit, tours the world eight months out of the year, performing and lecturing, while Peterson, who has studied with some of the world's finest classical and jazz guitarists, teaches music and performs primarily on O`ahu.  He recently played for appreciative crowds at the 19th Annual SLack Key Guitar Festival, Ki Ho`alu 2001.

The Honolulu Star Bulletin has said of Lee and Peterson:  "...The duo is clearly taking Hawaiian music in a fresh and imaginative direction that has worldwide appeal..."

Bamboo Slack Key, their latest offering, takes us on a musical journey to the most remote areas of an unforgettable island, Maui.  Peterson, a prolific composer, has drawn much inspiration from the beauty of the island and has composed eight selections reflecting his experiences there.  He collaborated with Lee to give us three more pieces.  A hauntingly beautiful arrangement of Johnny Almeida's "Kanaka Waiwai" completes the journey.

Honolulu, Hawai`i, July, 2001... Hula Records is proud to announce the debut release by THE KAHAUANU LAKE SINGERS - Na Mele `Auhau (Songs of Tribute). The CD single features two compositions by Kahauanu Lake, recipient of The Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts' Lifetime Achievement Award: "Hole Waimea `Elua" a hula `auana adaptation of the traditional "Hole Waimea," and "Kawena" written for the noted conservator of Hawaiian culture, Mary Kawena Pukui. Hula Records is proud to announce the release of Hawaiian Style by the incomparable Kahauanu Lake Trio on compact disc.  Kahauanu Lake is acknowledged as one of the most significant figures in 20th century Hawaiian music during the Statehood Era (1959-2000).  He is credited with bringing the `ukulele from a rhythm instrument into the spotlight.  Playing lead on his custom-made baritone `ukulele, Kahauanu is joined by his brother Tommy Lake on acoustic bass, and Al Machida on guitar.  The trio's hybrid brand of unamplified jazz-swing tinged traditional Hawaiian music, imaginative use of chords, and tight harmonies, mad them one of Waikiki's premier groups from 1955 until well into the 80's.  Their loyal fans include both locals and tourists alike; and a whole generation of musicians has been influenced by this Hoku Award-winning group.  in 1989 the Hawaiian Academy of Recording Arts awarded "Mr. K" with its highest honor, a Lifetime Achievement Award.
