| | | Aunty May’s Hula Favorites | Aunty May CDHS-641 | |
|
In a cheery green house up the street from me is Aunty May’s house. Her full name is May Kalehua Kamai. and I first met her about 25 years ago when she was playing ‘ukulele and singing with the Pua Melia Trio. She had a beautiful voice then and still has it! I never knew that one day she would end up playing music with me and for several years she played rhythm guitar with Joe Keaulana on bass. We did some interisland traveling together as a trio but Aunty May has seen so much more of the world as a musical ambassador for Hawaiian Airlines and the famed Kodak Hula Show. She’s charmed literally millions of people with her lilting soprano in England, Holland, Canada, Korea, Japan, the isles of Polynesia, and most recently, in France. She can also sing as low as a tenor and, if she must, she’s not too bad on the upright bass, either. Like most of us Hawaiians, she’s a self-taught singer and musician. Aunty May’s specialty is hula music and that’s why she has performed for so many award-winning hula groups and well-known celebrities too... The last time I was in Aunty May’s house, she was completing a kapa kuiki (Hawaiian quilt) for someone dear to her. She loves people and Hawaiian music and I know that you’ll love listening to Aunty May’s hula favorites, as countless others have.” – Kimo Alama Keaulana, educator, award-winning singer-musician and the kumu hula’s kumu hula.

| | | Best Of The Champagne Lady | Myra English CDHS-602 | |
|
In response to popular demand and our deep desire to preserve the very best in Hawaiian music, we at Hula Records are proud to present an anthology of vintage Hawaiian music – "Myra English, Best of the Champagne Lady."
It's hard to resist the music of Myra English. It's evocative and gently persuasive, like a sunrise or a full moon. It's a riot of wonderful music sung in the "old time" style. It's classy, unique – like a glass of French champagne. Myra was a product of a Hawai‘i long gone, obliterated in the name of "progress" – a time when Hawaiian and hapa-haole music was heard EVERYWHERE in night clubs from Iwilei to Waikiki. Myra worked with the best in the business, and in her own right, has produced some of the Hawaiian music industry's biggest hits. Myra English (who died in 2001 at the age of 68) was far and away one of Hawai‘i's quintessential entertainers – not just a musician, not just a performer, but a word-class, well-rounded entertainer. She was a cultural treasure and one heck of a lady – a Champagne Lady...
Biographical notes, photos, English and Hawaiiaiian lyrics and comments about each song are encluded in the CD booklet.

| | | Hawai'i Today | Loyal Garner CDHS-558 | |
|
“Loyal Garner was called ‘The Lady of Love’ for good reason – her music embodied goodness, her performance radiated with heartfelt emotion, her voice projected the aloha from the heart. She may be gone, but her legacy is the vast riches of song that continues to tick like a heartbeat within us all.” – Wayne Harada, The Honolulu Advertiser
Loyal’s fans have requested that we re-issue “Hawai‘i Today” in CD format and we are happy to comply. Although she left us all too soon, at the age of 55, we have her music to remind us of her stellar career, her moving stories told through song, the contemporary flair she brought to Hawaiian favorites, and her exceptional showmanship – her smile, that voice, fingers “tickling the ivories,” the banter, and most of all, the love she shared with her audiences.
Lyrics and translations are included for the four Hawaiian language songs.

| | | Hi`ipoi I Ka `Aina Aloha | Edith Kanaka`ole CDHS-568 | |
|
When she recorded this album in 1979, at the age of 66, she was already a great-grandmother...not the usual profile of a recording artist. But then, "Aunty" Edith Kanaka‘ole was an extraordinary kupuna (elder) and a truly Renaissance woman. Her expertise in the field of ancient Hawaiian chant and dance, highly regarded. As she herself once said, "Most people think of me as a chanter, but I've been singing all my life." She had also been composing songs all her life – and indeed there are some five dozen to her credit. "Aunty" Edith's song "Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai" (The Plants of the Sea) is now a mandatory dance number for contemporary hula dancers and this recording demostrates why the song – and its composer – are so loved. The album won the coveted Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Best Traditional Album in 1980.
Original and updated liner notes are included, as are Hawaiian lyrics and their translations.

| | | Jazz Hawaiian Style | Keahi Conjugacion CDHRI-1021 | |
|
Hawaiian music and jazz were made for each other, but it takes an artist with deep roots in both styles to make the marriage work. Keahi Conjugacion brings the soul of a daughter of Hawai‘i and the fire of a jazz diva to this celebration of all that is lyrical and swinging in the music of the Islands. With inspired accompaniment from keyboard wizard Dan Del Negro, and local jazz greats Gabe Baltazar, Sam Ahia, Buddy Fo, and David Choy, Keahi finds the jazz heart of her own originals and Hawaiian music classics alike. Keahi's brothers, Tony C and Brother Noland, are already stars of the Hawaiian music scene; with this CD, Keahi takes her rightful place at their side. - Chris Vandercook, local jazzman.

|
Hula Records is pleased to introduce a new generation of Hawaiian music fans to the voice of Auntie Ida Keli‘i Chun - an artist well known to long time residents of our state. The latter will recall the lu‘au favorites, hula standards and beautiful ballads sung by the songbird who first recorded "Ahulili" and sang with the likes of veteran Hawaiian entertainers Joe Kahaulelio, George Naope and Lei Collins; toured Canada and the U.S. with Ray Kinney in the '50's; and later played for Maiki Aiu Lake's noted hula halau. | | | Sunset At Makaha | Agnes Malabey Weisbarth and the Makaha Serenaders CDHS-537 | |
|
In his Honolulu Advertiser column, Island Sounds, music critic Wayne Harada wrote: "This is vintage stuff, from the vaults of Hula Records, reissued as part of the label's Legendary Classic Series. You have to be pretty senior to know Auntie Aggie and her Makaha Serenaders, who were a radio an hotel staple for years.
The songs, and the delivery style, are clearly from a bygone era, when vocal ensembles were true troubadours. The performers are long gone – Auntie Aggie died Oct. 3, 1977, at age 55 – so the archival melodies serve as a tribute and a primer...It's old fashioned, old-style, hula-oriented music, with precise rhythms, tempos, enunciation, delivery..."
Kimo Alama Keaulana, hula master and Hawaiian music historian adds, "Auntie Aggie and her handpicked singers and musicians really knew the true Hawaiian way of singing and playing...[Auntie's] musical and vocal interpretation of [these songs was] faithful to their original intent; her phrasing and pronunciation of Hawaiian, impeccable, and the rhythm and tempo, just great – especially for the hula!"
The CD foldout includes Hawaiian lyrics, English translations, biographical information about the artist, the importance of songs to Hawaiians, and a tribute to a special hula lady: superb liner note writer, Jean "Kini" Sullivan.
